Exterior Car Detailing in Vancouver, WA & Portland, OR
A proper exterior detail goes far beyond a basic car wash — clay bar, decontamination, wax or sealant, and more. We come to you.
Professional Exterior Detailing — Step by Step
There is a significant difference between a car wash and a professional exterior detail. A car wash removes surface-level dirt. An exterior detail by JP's Top Shelf Detailing removes bonded contaminants, protects your paint with a professional-grade product, and leaves your vehicle looking sharp and protected for months. Here's exactly what we do, in order.
Step 1: Wheel and Tire Cleaning
We start with the wheels because they are the dirtiest part of the vehicle. Brake dust, road tar, and grime are acid-treated and agitated with brushes designed for wheel barrels, spokes, and lug nuts. Tires are scrubbed with a stiff brush to remove old tire dressing, dirt, and oxidation. Clean wheels from the start means no contamination splashing back onto the paint during the wash process.
Step 2: Full Hand Wash
We hand wash the entire vehicle using the two-bucket method with a grit guard to prevent swirl marks. pH-balanced car soap is used — never dish soap, which strips protective coatings and dries out rubber seals. We wash from top to bottom, rinsing frequently. Every panel, mirror, door jamb edge, and lower rocker panel is cleaned thoroughly.
Step 3: Iron Decontamination
After washing, we apply an iron decontamination spray that chemically dissolves embedded metallic particles — brake dust, rail dust, and industrial fallout — that bond to your paint and glass over time. These particles are invisible to the naked eye but cause paint degradation if left untreated. The product reacts and bleeds purple as it dissolves the iron particles, then rinses away clean.
Step 4: Clay Bar Treatment
Even after washing and iron decontamination, your paint still has bonded surface contamination that can't be removed with chemicals alone. A detailing clay bar is lubricated and glided across each panel to physically pick up contaminants, overspray, and industrial fallout. The result is a silky-smooth paint surface that you can feel by running your fingers across it. This step is essential before applying any wax or sealant — it ensures the protection product bonds directly to clean paint rather than sitting on top of contamination.
Step 5: Bug and Tar Removal
Bug splatter on the front bumper, hood, and mirrors contains acids that etch into paint if left in place. Road tar and asphalt spots on rocker panels and lower doors are similarly difficult to remove with regular washing. We treat these areas with dedicated bug and tar remover to dissolve and wipe away these stubborn contaminants safely without scratching.
Step 6: Wax or Paint Sealant Application
Once the paint is clean and decontaminated, we apply a high-quality wax or paint sealant to every exterior painted surface. This protective layer provides:
- UV protection to prevent paint oxidation and fading
- A hydrophobic surface that causes water to bead and roll off
- Protection from light contamination, bird droppings, and tree sap
- Enhanced gloss and depth of color
A properly applied wax or paint sealant typically provides 3–4 months of protection under normal driving conditions. We offer both carnauba wax (warm, natural look) and synthetic paint sealant (longer-lasting, more durable) depending on your preference and goals.
Step 7: Exterior Glass Cleaning
All exterior glass — windshield, rear window, side windows, and mirrors — is cleaned with a professional glass cleaner applied in overlapping motions and buffed streak-free. Clean glass improves visibility and the overall appearance of the vehicle.
Step 8: Tire Dressing and Trim Dressing
Fresh tires make a vehicle look sharp. We apply a tire dressing that restores the rich black color to the sidewall without leaving a sling-prone wet shine. Exterior plastic trim pieces — including door handles, mirror bases, and bumper trim — are treated with a trim dressing to restore their color and prevent cracking from UV exposure.
Exterior Detail vs. a Car Wash
A car wash cleans the surface of your paint. An exterior detail cleans, decontaminates, and protects it. Most people who have had a proper exterior detail done notice immediately how much smoother and shinier their paint feels compared to after a normal wash. The protection from wax or sealant also means your car stays cleaner longer between washes because water and debris slide off more easily.
For the Pacific Northwest climate — with its combination of rain, road grime, industrial fallout from Portland's freeways, and UV exposure in summer — regular exterior detailing is one of the most cost-effective ways to preserve your vehicle's finish and resale value.
Wax vs. Paint Sealant — Which Should You Choose?
Both wax and paint sealant protect your paint, but they have different characteristics. Carnauba wax provides a warm, deep, natural-looking gloss that many enthusiasts prefer for show cars. However, it typically lasts 2–3 months before needing to be reapplied. Synthetic paint sealants offer a slightly crisper look and provide longer-lasting protection — typically 4–6 months — and are more resistant to wash chemicals and environmental conditions. We discuss both options with you and recommend the best choice based on your vehicle and how it's used.
Want Longer-Lasting Protection?
If you're looking for protection that lasts years rather than months, consider paint correction followed by ceramic coating. Ceramic coatings bond chemically to your paint and provide 2–5 years of hard, hydrophobic protection that far outperforms traditional wax. We offer both services and can advise whether your vehicle is a good candidate.
Pair It with Interior Detailing
An exterior detail is a great standalone service, but when you combine it with our interior detailing, you get The Works — a complete inside-and-out transformation. Our Full Detail Packages bundle both services at a better rate and are the most popular option for customers who want their car looking its absolute best.
